With a 9F, the decisive factor is the school, not the Bureau

A 9F student visa is not something you file on your own. It is applied for through a school registered with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and accredited to admit foreign students, and the file moves through that school's registrar and its Bureau of Immigration liaison. Choose a school without that standing and nothing after that point can be done. Two further points are routinely underestimated: your enrolment status is the substantive test at every renewal, not the paperwork, and the authentication of your academic records is a long chain that has to start early. Leaving it until the weeks before term usually means missing the start.

Application Instructions

Do I renew a 9F myself?

No. Renewal is initiated by the school; a student cannot file it alone with the Bureau of Immigration. Your enrolment status is the substantive condition for renewal, so keep an eye on both the school's timetable and your own registration status.

What authentication do my academic records need?

Usually notarisation followed by authentication, and the exact requirements differ from school to school. The chain takes a long time, so start it while you are applying to the school rather than after you have been admitted.

Do children in primary or secondary school need a 9F?

A child entering primary or secondary school is on a different visa path from a higher-education student, and guardianship arrangements come into it. The right path depends on the child's age, the type of school and the parents' own status in the Philippines.

My 9F has expired. What do I do now?

Establish exactly when it lapsed first, then choose the remedy. The longer it is left, the more complicated it becomes to fix, so verify your status as soon as you notice.
