Philippines 9A tourist visa: two different checklists, and why timing is what trips people up

Mandarin narration with English subtitles on screen.

The 9A looks simple — refusals almost all come from the same few places

The tourist visa has the shortest document list, yet a surprising share of applications get bounced. The reasons cluster in three places: the age and form of your documents (some have a validity window, some must be originals), the timing of your extension (file too early and it will not be accepted; file too late and you are already overstaying), and the discipline of continuous extending (there is a cap on total stay, and when you reach it you must change visa routes, not extend again). Get those three right and the 9A really is straightforward.

Requirements and how it works

Suitable for

People coming to the Philippines for short-term tourism, family visits, or business trips.

Service Scope

Required documents (entry tourist visa application)

  1. Original passport (valid for at least 6 months), plus 2 photocopies of the passport data page;
  2. Original national ID card, plus 1 photocopy of both sides;
  3. 2 colour photos with a white background, 2-inch size (35 × 45 mm);
  4. Bank statements for the last 6 months, with a balance of more than RMB 20,000;
  5. Original certificate of employment, plus 1 photocopy of the company business licence (retirees provide a retirement certificate instead);
  6. Travel itinerary in English.

Additional documents in these cases

Travelling with children: also bring

  1. Certificate of enrolment from the child's school;
  2. The child's passport / student ID;

If you want to show additional financial standing, you can add photocopies of property documents such as a real-estate title or vehicle registration, with one English translation. Leave this out if you have none.

Processing time

Generally 5–7 business days (depending on the case and Bureau of Immigration schedule).

Frequently asked questions

How long can I stay on a 9A tourist visa, and how many times can I extend it?

The stay granted on arrival and the number of extensions available afterwards are set by the Bureau of Immigration, and there is a cap on total accumulated stay. Once you reach that cap you must switch to another visa route — the 9A cannot be extended indefinitely.

How early should I file my tourist visa extension?

Not on the expiry date. Queues at the Bureau and requests to fix documents both eat time, and once the expiry date has passed you are overstaying — which is handled differently and charged differently from an ordinary extension. File with room to spare.

Can I extend my tourist visa myself?

For a straightforward short extension, many people do. But if it involves a downgrade, a change of status, fixing an overstay, or you are close to the total-stay cap, the sequence and the documents get more complex — get advice before you start.

How do I downgrade from a work visa to a 9A tourist visa?

A downgrade follows a set sequence, and it has to be tied in with the cancellation of your existing visa. Done in the wrong order, it can leave a gap in your status. Have someone who knows the process arrange it.

Do I need an ECC before leaving the Philippines?

Whether you need an Emigration Clearance Certificate depends on how long you have stayed in the Philippines and what visa you hold. If you need one and do not have it, discovering that at the airport on the day of your flight usually leaves no time to fix it.
