First time in the Philippines and want to get online the moment you land — to book a Grab, check the map, or message your hotel? Here is the full 2026 picture: where to buy a SIM, how to choose between Globe / Smart / DITO, how to clear the mandatory SIM Registration (SIM Registration Act), how to load up and buy data, and whether a tourist eSIM or a local SIM is the better deal. Prices are indicative; confirm on site.
1. Where to buy — the airport is easiest, convenience stores work too
- Airport counters (best for first-timers): Manila (NAIA) and Cebu (MCIA) arrival halls have official Globe and Smart counters, mostly open 24/7, accepting cash and international cards. Staff insert the SIM and help you register on the spot.
- Official stores / mall branches: Globe, Smart and DITO stores are in major malls — buy SIMs, switch to eSIM, or ask about plans. Good if you need a proper receipt.
- Convenience stores (7-Eleven, etc.): sell blank prepaid SIMs and load credits, but do not register for you — you register yourself online. Best for experienced travelers.
Rough prices: a blank prepaid SIM is about PHP 40–100; an airport "tourist bundle" (with 30 days of large data) is typically PHP 1,000–3,000; DITO starter SIMs go as low as PHP 49 (3GB / 15 days).
2. Globe / Smart / DITO — choose by where you are going
All three are fine in cities; the difference is on the islands and remote areas. Quick verdict: for island-hopping, El Nido, Coron and Palawan, pick Globe; if you stay in Manila/Cebu cities and want cheap data, DITO wins on value; Smart is rock-solid in cities and along highways.
🔵 Globe — widest island coverage, the tourist favorite
Broadest reach across the Boracay, El Nido, Coron and Palawan tourist corridors, with the fewest dropouts once you leave the main towns. Tourist bundles come with big data and unlimited calls/texts. The safest pick for island-hopping.
🟢 Smart — strong in cities and on highways, the reliable veteran
Solid in Manila, Cebu, Puerto Princesa and along national roads, with a mature, stable network. Tourist packs run from small to large data over 7–30 days — great for a mostly-city trip.
🔴 DITO — cheapest, great in cities, gaps on the islands
The newcomer: cheapest rates and fast-growing 5G, excellent value in big cities. But in 2026 it still has coverage gaps in remote islands, so don't make it your only SIM for island-hopping. Best if budget is the priority and you stay urban.
Note: on tour boats, in lagoons or trekking inland, any network comes and goes — the prettiest spots are often off-grid by nature, and that is normal.
3. SIM registration — passport + official portal, mandatory
Under the Philippines' SIM Registration Act (RA 11202), every SIM (including foreign tourists') must be registered, or it won't activate / will be deactivated. Airport counters usually do it for you on the spot; a SIM you buy yourself must be registered on the official portal.
Foreign tourists need:
- a valid passport (upload a photo of the bio page);
- a selfie (for face/identity verification);
- a Philippine address (your hotel address is fine);
- in some cases a return ticket (to show length of stay).
Official online portals (use only these, free):
- Globe: new.globe.com.ph/simreg
- Smart: simreg.smart.com.ph
- DITO: register.dito.ph (or the DITO app)
A tourist-registered SIM is usually valid only for the length of your visa / authorized stay, and may be auto-deactivated afterward. Never scan random QR codes to register — beware phishing sites and use only the official domains above.
4. How to load up and buy data plans
Philippine prepaid works on "Load + Promo": top up credit on your number, then subscribe to a data/call pack by SMS or app. Top-up points are everywhere — convenience stores, malls, official apps and stores.
🔵 Globe — GoSAKTO / tourist bundles
Use the GlobeOne app or GoSAKTO to mix data + calls + social packs freely. Airport tourist bundles often run 30 days for about PHP 2,000–3,000 with 100+ GB plus unlimited calls/texts.
🟢 Smart — the Giga series
Use the Smart app to get the Giga series (Giga Video, Giga Games, etc.). Tourist packs run from small 7-day to large 30-day data — pick by trip length.
🔴 DITO — cheapest plans in-app
Use the DITO app for 12GB / 25GB / 60GB plans over 7 / 15 / 30 days, most with unlimited texts plus unlimited DITO-to-DITO calls — the lowest per-GB price of the three.
5. Using eSIM — tourist eSIM vs local SIM
In 2026 all three telcos support eSIM (iPhone XS or newer / eSIM-capable Android). There are also many tourist eSIMs (Airalo, Holafly, Jetpac, etc.) you can buy on your phone before you even land.
✈️ Tourist eSIM (ready on arrival, easiest)
Pros: install before departure, online the second you land, no queue and no registration; keep your home number for OTPs. Cons: data packs are smaller and pricier per GB, and you have no local number for calls/SMS to Philippine numbers. Best for short trips, data only.
📶 Local physical SIM / local eSIM (long stay, best value)
Pros: big data, low price, and a local mobile number (handy for Grab, food delivery and Philippine OTPs). Cons: requires registration and buying on the ground. Best for longer stays, ride-hailing/food, and deep island trips.
Practical tips:
- Dual-SIM best setup: keep your home number on roaming for OTPs only (secondary, data off), run data on the local SIM/eSIM.
- Grab, food delivery and some bank checks often need a local number — for long stays, go local.
- Subscribe to your plan and download offline maps while still in the city/airport — don't wait until you're out of signal.
- Save screenshots of your passport and return ticket on your phone for quick upload during registration.
